Borda Bean (Cow Peas) Ghugri

Mum and I recently went grocery shopping to Vel Spice in Carrum Downs. I was so excited to see frozen Borda Beans (Cow Peas, or Black Eyed Peas) in the freezer section. Vel Spice stocks some very popular Fijian grocery items. They have Borda Beans, diced Cassava (Tapioca), Taro, Breadfruit and Katthar (Jackfruit) in the freezer section. In the shelf stable items they stock a whole range of curry powders and spice blends fro Fiji too.

Mum and I were reminiscing about Borda Bean plants at her parents home. Nani grew the beans in her garden. Many a story was shared between my mum and her siblings as they shelled the beans. This dish is steeped in a lot of memories as I recall those precious times as an

ankle biter.

The frozen packets of Borda Beans lying behind the glass door of the freezer were calling out to me. I just had to get a packet and make some ghugri.

In Bengal, where this dish originates from, Ghugni is served for a leisurely Sunday breakfast with generous servings of hot puris but it can be eaten at any time of the day as a snack. In Fiji it is generally eaten as an afternoon snack. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do!!.
